Item B3 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: January 19, 2011 Division: BOCC Bulk Item: No Department: Heather Carruthers / District 3 Staff Contact Person/Phone #: C Schreck, 292-3430 __________________________________________________________________________________________ AGENDA ITEM WORDING: January 2011 as Sculpture Key West month. __________________________________________________________________________________________ ITEM BACKGROUND: See attached proclamation. __________________________________________________________________________________________ PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: Annual art event, recognized last year by the BOCC (January 2010 as SKW month) __________________________________________________________________________________________ CONTRACT/AGREEMENT CHANGES: __________________________________________________________________________________________ STAFF RECOMMENDATION: __________________________________________________________________________________________ TOTAL COST: INDIRECT COST: BUDGETED: NANAYes DIFFERENTIAL OF LOCAL PREFERENCE: NA COST TO COUNTY: SOURCE OF FUNDS: None NA COST TO AIRPORT: None COST TO PFC: None REVENUE PRODUCING:AMOUNT PER YEAR: Yes __ No _X_ NA APPROVED BY: County Attorney __ OMB/Purchasing __ Risk Management __ DOCUMENTATION: Included X Not Required _____ DISPOSITION:AGENDA ITEM # __________________________ _________________ Sculpture Key West Month Proclamation - January 2011 WHEREAS, in the Park predecessor to Sculpture Key West, was begun by local sculptor Jim Racchi as an annual sculpture exhibition at historic Fort Zachary Taylor; and WHEREAS , in 2004 members of the art community Sculpture Key West, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide a platform for dynamic, contemporary sculpture designed to inspire and educate the community of Key West, the Florida Keys and visitors as well as bring national attention to what has become a widely recognized annual exhibition; and WHEREAS , since its formation, Sculpture Key West has annually exhibited sculpture in the historically, environmentally and culturally important settings of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, The Key West Garden Club at the National Historic West Martello Tower, and Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, - WHEREAS , artists exhibiting with Sculpture Key West have generously shared their work with the community through participation in a public art program designed to place art in and around neighborhoods, at county locales, and at businesses throughout Key West; and WHEREAS , for the past 6 years Sculpture Key West has encouraged young artists at Key West High School, the Montessori School, Horace O and HS2 in their pursuit of learning about the process of making art by hosting artist talks and tours of all of the venues for the students and their teachers; and WHEREAS , for the past sixteen years, the Florida State Park Service, The Key West Garden Club and now the Key West Botanical Garden have generously opened their facilities and provided substantial assistance to Sculpture Key West, enabling Sculpture Key West to become an annual event thereby attracting many visitors to the State Park, historic Fort, the Gardens and their environs; and WHEREAS , Sculpture Key West is considered a leading contemporary art event in South Florida; and WHEREAS , Sculpture Key West provides much sought after exhibition space for local, county, state, national and international artists; and WHEREAS , during challenging times art, especially public art, connects the best parts of each of us to the other and reminds us that we can transform our thinking in ways that help us see possibilities instead of problems; and NOW, THEREFORE , I Heather Carruthers, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, hereby proclaim January 2011 as The citizens of Monroe County, residents and visitors to our county are urged to visit Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, the Key West Garden Club and the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, particularly during the forthcoming Sculpture Key West event (January 15 April 15, 2011) to experience art in an art- loving community that is tolerant and imaginative and to view art outdoors in extraordinary tropical settings. th Dated this 19 day of January, 2011 _____________________________________ Heather Carruthers, Mayor
