A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONRE COUNTY IN
RECOGNITION OF THE LATE "SANTA" RAY ALBURY
,
WHEREAS, Ray Albury, a member of one of the Keys' founding families, passed away at the age of 72
on August 15,2002 at South Miami Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury was born in Tavernier and lived all of his life in the Keys; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury as a young child, survived the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, along with other
family members, huddled in a house which had been hand-built from driftwood by Mr. Albury's father and
grandfather in the late 1920's; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury served as a medic in the Korean War, worked thereafter in heavy construction,
until the last ten years of his career which he spent in the Tax Collector's office in Tavernier; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury was known and loved by parents and children throughout the Upper Keys as
"Santa Ray", since beginning a tradition of wrapping and passing out gifts to eight families almost two decades ago;
and
WHEREAS, over the years, the tradition grew to gift giving to more than 200 children, or "Ray's Kids", as
they became known, who might not have otherwise received anything; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury never met anyone he didn't like, never had a bad word to say about anybody, and
was always ready with a hug and smile for everyone; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Albury is survived by two brothers, Anthony and Kenneth Albury, Ray's Kids, and
many, many friends; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1: Hereby Adopts this Resolution as an expression to the family of their deepest sympathy
in the passing of the late Ray Albury, and in great appreciation of the service he gave to his community.
Section 2:
Forwards a copy of this Resolution to Mr. Albury's family expressing the Board's
sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a
meeting of said Board held on the day of , A.D., 2002.
