BOX 1409 KEY WEST, FL 33041-1409 September 26, 2017 Rick Ramsey Monroe County Sheriff 5525 College Road Key West, Fl. 33040 Re: Affordable Workforce Housing and Overnight Shelter Dear Sheriff Ramsey: 1300 White Street (305)809-3840 ccates@chyofkeywest-fl.gov As the Florida Keys are facing unprecedented times, I need your assistance in the critical area of affordable workforce housing. The devastation of Keys' neighborhoods just outside the City of Key West will certainly have a tremendous impact upon our workforce. The City has available land to aid our lower keys neighbors and Monroe County in rebuilding our communities. A crucial part of the puzzle is the continued maintenance of the overnight shelter on County property adjacent to your facility on Stock Island. While we still intend to fully relocate the facility, I believe that we could use the land intended for the shelter to provide housing for displaced residents of the workforce impacted by Hurricane Irma. With your support, I will seek the cooperation of the City Commission and other County leaders in bringing a plan forward. Rest assured I understand the hesitancy you may have in supporting the current existence of the shelter. We will work with you on any operational issues while we evaluate other short and long term options for permanent siting. I appreciate your continued consideration and look forward to speaking with you further on the issue. Sincerely, 47 Craig Cates Mayor Key to the Caribbean - Average yearly temperature 770 F. M Z- 0
