AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to write -off tipping fees incurred at the Long Key
Transfer Station in the amount of $4,077.97 for disposal of fire debris from Marathon trap yard fire
that the County is unable to collect. The write -off will be made to the solid waste enterprise fund.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Following the Marathon trap yard fire on June 5, 2017, the County
received a request from commercial lobster fishermen /owners of the property about the need to
expeditiously dispose of the fire debris. The request was based on a need to clear the yard to allow
for construction of new traps before the next season (2 months hence). The County advised them
that a separate account would be established to facilitate tracking. Staff advised the Commission at
the 21 June meeting that it would try to recoup payment from any insurance proceeds, but such
efforts have been unsuccessful. Staff also contacted the Fisherman's trade association to determine
what, if any, assistance might be available. No source of funds (neither insurance nor other) is
available or therefore the fees are uncollectable and staff request for a write -off in the amount of
$4,077.97 to the Solid Waste Enterprise fund.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: The BOCC provided informal approval to follow the
above proposed course of action at its June 21, 2017 meeting.
