The Monroe County Public Library proposes to undertake a preservation assessment of its unbound, paper-based
special collections that will result in an action plan for immediate and continued preservation efforts. A preservation
consultant will survey this special collection, provide a preservation assessment, and train staff on proper handling and
housing of the artifacts, Proper preservation supplies and materials will be purchased to stabilize and preserve the
collections for greater accessibility. The three special collections identified for this project are important materials for
preservation because:
. The Spanish-American War sheet music collection is an invaluable resource to researchers of the war, sheet music
and cover art scholars, and historians of this era, Because of Key West's proximity to Cuba, the Spanish-American War
was a significant event, affecting every aspect of our culture,
. South Florida's oldest court documents spans 1828-1919, Highlights of these collection include the first murder case
in South Florida, Spanish land grant and homesteading claims, and the trial of ten "free men of color" charged with
entering the Florida territory, These documents inform and educate our citizenry not only about the origins of our courts.
but also the roots of our culture.
. The WWI-era passes were used for identification of Key West's waterfront workers, Along with a small photograph,
the information provided on the passes includes name, birth date, birthplace, occupation and employer, The information
and images provided on these 750 passes chronicle Key West's WWI-era industries, and the ethnic, social and cultural
history of Key West's residents,
