GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY
June 2, 2016
WHEREAS, June 2❑d is the birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who was shot and
killed on the south side of Chicago, just one week after performing at President Obama's
Inauguration in 2013; and
WHEREAS, hunters wear orange in the woods for the safety of themselves and others,
recognizing orange is becoming the symbol of gun safety; and
WHEREAS, Hadiya Pendleton's classmates wore orange to honor their murdered friend;
and
WHEREAS, what started as a simple call to action has grown into a national movement
to honor victims and survivors of gun violence and increase efforts to prevent gun violence in the
future; and
WHEREAS, an average of 91 people are killed by guns each day in the United States,
including suicide, murder and accidental death; and
WHEREAS, the more cities and towns that proclaim June 2°d as Gun Violence
Awareness Day, the more promising the hope for a future free from gun violence; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County is a place where life and human rights are highly valued
and where we resolve our differences with peaceful negotiation and mutual respect;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Heather Carruthers, Mayor of Monroe County proclaim
June 2nd to be
GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY
IN Monroe County and call on all citizens of Monroe County to wear orange and to
commemorate the day with events and activities that honor the victims and survivors of gun
violence and to promote gun safety in this year and in perpetuity.
