AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation of the Commercial Green Building Silver Certification
by the Florida Green Building Coalition President Nate Ritter, for the construction of the Stock Island
Fire Station on Maloney Avenue Stock Island.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Stock Island Fire Station was completed in April of 2014. The building
is the 8600Sq.ft. replacement of the original Stock Island Fire Station on Maloney Avenue which
consisted of a single office and garage. Construction of the Fire Station began in January of 2013. It is
the first County building designed using the FGBC standards. It incorporates a number of "green"
features including a 19,000 Gallon rainwater catchment system and a low energy 0.8 Watt per square
foot lighting system. The fire station achieved the highest FGBC certification score in the state to date
for commercial structures. It has been certified at the silver level.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: In July 2010 the Monroe County Board of County
Commissioners approved Resolution 147-2010 adopting the Florida Green Building Coalition's
(FGBC) Green Commercial Building Standard as the policy for all future county buildings.
