Year
AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross is locally recognized annually for its essential
humanitarian role in our community during times of personal and regional emergencies, serving
the Keys since 1917. This year, as we celebrate the 96th anniversary of the first American Red
Cross in the Keys, we honor the role of the Greater Miami & the Keys contribution to making
the Florida Keys, and America, a stronger, safer and healthier place.
WHEREAS, for more than nine decades, the American Red Cross in the Keys has led the
effort to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. It has been the place where compassionate
people freely give their time and talent to help prevent and ease human suffering among friends,
neighbors, and even strangers.
WHEREAS, from single-family fires to earthquakes such as in Haiti, never have so many
of our neighbors, near and far, needed the help of the American Red Cross more and in so many
ways.
WHEREAS, through it all, the Greater Miami & the Keys needed you; the citizens of
Monroe County made contributions to fund the costs of providing immediate relief to save the
lives of friends, neighbors and strangers. And you volunteered your time to help those in need.
WHEREAS, as we celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of the American Red
Cross to building a better quality of life in Monroe County, we must also look forward and each
do our part to ensure that the American Red Cross remains vital, ready to help us prevent,
prepare for and respond to the unknown challenges that lie ahead.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, George Neugent, Mayor, by virtue of the authority vested in me
by Monroe County, Florida, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2013 as
AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH
I urge all Americans to continue to give your time and money, to make a difference in the
humanitarian fabric of this community. Because when we help the American Red Cross, we help
each other.
Signed this 20th day of February, 2013
George R. Neugent, Mayor
Monroe County, Florida
