AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Mayor's Proclamation honoring Keys Energy Services 75th
anniversary.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Keys Energy Service (KEYS) is marking its 75"' anniversary of service
to Lower Keys and City of Key West customers. In 1943, the City of Key West acquired a private
electric company, then known as Key West Electric Company, instituted an utility board and began
City Electric. In 1959, City Electric expanded services outside of the City through the Lower Keys to
the Seven Mile Bridge. In 1969, the State Legislature passed an enabling act that provided for the
election of utility board members. Until 1987, all electric service throughout the Lower Keys and
Key West, was generated locally. That year, the utility was connected to the mainland system
through the tie line. The name was changed to Keys Energy Services in 2002.
