Clean the Keys in 60 days and beyond! mama0cean with wave over and "she needs our Love" under TM with state of Florida 203.5, first use 2014. Education and Research of shorelines. mama0cean USPTO TM 1/6/16 and filed 12/8/2014. The Problem and the Need for this to be lone. Here in Monroe County as in many places in the world we have a huge problem with assorted garbage on our shorelines, mangroves and nearshore islands, Some examples of this garbage and what its capable of are. 1. Plastics /Microplastics- From bottles, plastic silverware, straws, lighters, bags, buckets etc and the proof of what this stuff does in harming the environment for turtles, sea birds, shore birds, dolphins and whales has been long ago confirmed /verified. 2. Fishing Line and Trap Rope- We have saved over a dozen turtles over the last 15years that were wrapped up in trap rope and released many birds that were wrapped up in fishing line and this is a constant threat and danger to wild life. 3. Styrene and Styrofoams- This stuff continues to break down and becomes part of the food chain where fish mainly consume it, when broken down it resembles fish eggs. Why This Was Created After over 25 years in the Florida Keys and then 4 years in C America I have seen too much in regards to what this garbage or debris kills or harms. As more people come to the Keys and the more garbage is inevitable as we all can see. We started cleanups in 4 other countries and its just as needed right here, the damage it does has long been proven and the time for this to happen is right now before the King High Tides of late October take all this sun baked, broken down plastic etc back to sea to do further damage. We can help change this, Monroe County can lead the State of Florida by example. A Partial, Helpful Solution This process will be documented, Recycables will be separated, usables saved, all weighed daily and disposed of properly in 5 defined steps. Through this process we will also be able to better identify certain target locations due to wind, currents or land configuration where more garbage tends to collect. For instance document where needs either weekly, bi weekly or monthly clean ups to maintain the beauty we have here and to ensure further safety for the marine life. This documentation will also help us to further educate a broader population of this problem. Step 1. In many of the mangroves only about 10% of the garbage /debris may be visible from a marine vantage point, however a storm or mean high tide may leave behind a swathe of damaging debris 3feet high and 5 feet wide that is very capable to harm or kill natures inhabitants. We find some odd stuff in the oddest places like TV's or car parts but also fuel drums, very large pieces of Styrofoam. We gather all the big stuff first and drag it out of the mangroves to a shore area where we can collect it easier by boat at a high tide. Step 2. Is to remove the smaller, easier to grab and bag plastics, styrene, flip flops, lighters, rope, trap throats etc. All will be separated as recyclable or not and even the fishing line can be collected and kept for the mono collecting stations thru out the Keys. CL C Step 3. Is to Rake the sand and through the dead sea grass to get any micros, bottle caps, cig butts or anything else that can cause harm to wildlife off the shoreline. All picked by hand and disposed properly. zi C Step 4. Is final walk and check to ensure we have collected all that needs to be removed and that there is nothing left behind except birds ,sand and trees! Step 5. Having filmed much of the prior 4 steps and all is gathered, separated accordingly and placed at a spot making it easier to load onto a boat to be removed is also going to be the weigh station. We will weigh and document what was collected, when and where for the garbage research chart /map for proof and truth of this project. We have cleaned over 4000lbs of assorted garbage In a afternoon, this shows the severity of the problem. There are many benefits of this creation The first of these is protecting the ocean, marine life, mammals and birds. Secondly much of this plastic has the potential to breed mosquitos and in these times of the latest viruses causing health impacts due to mosquitos breeding on un cleaned shorelines or nearby mangroves multiplies the possibilities of Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya being transmitted through such species as mosquitos. Discovery Channel filmed a cleanup of ours last August 11th proving that the unkept shorelines near houses or beach resorts were in fact breeding mosquitos in plastic cups, tubs etc. Unfortunately there were 3 releases of this "Mosquito" documentary and we are in one of them but not in the episode shown here and the 3 different releases we released in 220 countries! Thirdly is to protect and beautify what we love and why we live here. Lets lead by example for the county, the state and beyond. History and Experience. My history and experience with the Ocean and Monroe County is over 25 years old. I dove lobster commercially for myself, collected for universities, public aquariums and some petshops. in 2005 1 completed my own reef of 480.000 lbs to grow corals and live rock 3 miles out in the Atlantic to relieve wild collections elsewhere in the world. I have spoken at local grade schools in the past in regards mainly of shark finning, shark tournaments and deep water species. Now is devotion and passion to clean the ocean and further educate the need for this to be done. Speaking with local cub scouts and boy scouts in Septemeber also of this need for this to be done. If we don't take responsibility for what we love and where we live then who will? its time to lead by example. Clean the Keys Hello and thank you for the time to speak today regarding a very threatening issue and that's garbage and water quality control here in the Keys. My name is Douglas Hattendorf and I started mamaOcean 4yrs ago. I've lived here since 1991. I'm not a great speaker though, so thank you also for your patience. So the Keys are a gem of the state and the country and need to be cared for accordingly. While the word sanctuary means just that, much more needs to be done, and daily, to protect it. In the last 3 months we have collected over 15,000 pounds of trap rope from 4 turtle nesting beaches. These include Marquesas long and short beach, Boca Grande, Coco Plum and Grassy Key beach. This is not to mention all of the other garbage, etc., that we've collected this year alone. There have been many reports of turtles, dolphins and manatees wrapped in trap rope since the start of the year, and we have saved 14 turtles over the last 20 years. The ocean that brings the tourists and their money that so many rely on needs to have at least as much concern as the landscaping of the highway throughout the Keys, and that budget is in the Millions. We understand this can't happen overnight or maybe not even this year, through sanctuary or government channels, but it needs to be a priority. in the meantime mamaOcean is now a 5016, and we are ready to accept money, boats, or time to assist us, as well as providing monthly events to promote our cause. We are asking support from the county, not monetary but with faith and understanding that this needs to be done. I spoke with Sarah Fangman who is currently superintendent of the sanctuary and she supports this project also. We have divided this into four sections and four crews of four to be out daily, weather permitting. The 1" section will KW to Marquesas, 2 nd from MM 2 to MM 35 (scout key), 3 d MM 35 to MM 71 (channel 5 bridge), and last MM 71 to MM 105 (roughly Gilberts Marina). We can make a huge difference on the amount of garbage and rope that destroys what we Love. mamaocean sre u,<ae ou-t t«,e Mama Ocean is an organization dedicated to keeping our oceans clean for all present and future marine life and wildlife.
