PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the month of October is National Energy Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County is committed to reducing our community
greenhouse gas reductions by 40% by 2030 and adopted a Climate Action
Plan to reach those reduction goals by involving residents, businesses
and policy makers; and
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Climate Change Advisory Committee
recommends energy reduction as the primary mitigation to address climate
change issues; and
WHEREAS, the County greenhouse gas emissions inventory showed that 57%
of our greenhouse gas comes from electricity; and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that behavioral changes in energy use can drop
electricity bills by as much as 20 %; and low cost technologies can drop rates an
additional 20 %; and
WHEREAS, the County enacted an Energy Efficiency Conservation
Strategy in 2012, including benchmarking buildings; and
WHEREAS, partners like Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and Keys Energy
Services save residents thousands of dollars on their electric bills annually by
offering hundreds of thousands in energy efficiency rebates;
WHEREAS, to help our community be sustainable by reducing their carbon
footprint while saving money, Monroe County, Florida invites everyone to
participate in National Energy Awareness Month; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, David Rice, by virtue of the authority vested in
me as Mayor by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, do
hereby proclaim the month of October 2018 as
National Energy Awareness Month
In Monroe County, Florida and call upon the people of Monroe County to
observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies to
participate fittingly in the observation.
