AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Mayor's Proclamation for the 75th anniversary of the Marathon
Airport, observance and celebration event to be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Marathon Airport was originally constructed as a federal Civilian
Aeronautics Administration civilian airfield development project via the Civilian Aeronautics Act of
1938. Plans to build are dated June 1941 before the start of the war. When World War 11 started, the
newly constructed airfield became an "outfield" of the Key West Naval Airbase. After the war
ended, the airport was deactivated by the U.S. Navy and turned over to the State of Florida. It
became a civilian airport deeded to Monroe County in 1959. The military still trains the pilots how
to fly helicopters and C -130's at Marathon Airport occasionally through the year. It remains a busy
general aviation airport and executive jet services, now with U.S. Customs Services available for
incoming aircraft from out of the country. Multiple community services and agencies are present on
the property. Honoring its 75 anniversary and celebration on Saturday, October 20, 2018. (Note:
history of airport thanks to the historical work of Dan Gallagher, Tony Daiuto, and .Terry
Wilkinson.)
