His honor, courage, and commitment, to his country, his Corps, and this community is extremely evident in everything he does; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Major Mike Rhine served around the globe, at home and abroad defending freedom, protecting and strengthening nations, and combating terrorism during peacetime and at war. In 1999, he served with the 10th Marines in the Persian Gulf, forward deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm as an Artillery Fire Finder; These Devil Dog Fire Finders contributed to 75% of all artillery and mortar position strikes during this conflict, proving vital to defeating the enemy. In 2004 he served the 14th Marines in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was crucial implementing new, never been operationally tested, counter mortar radar technology protecting countless Iraqi citizens in numerous cities and thousands of U.S. and Coalition forces. He has mentored, trained, and lead countless Marines, sending them into battle well equipped and highly skilled in the fight against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Major Rhine is a resident of Marathon and following the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Irma he answered the call and was instrumental in the emergency response efforts. Decisive, dependable, tactful, and just, Sergeant Major Rhine took initiative and provided valuable service assisting both the City of Marathon and Monroe County emergency response efforts and personally helped hundreds of residents, and WHEREAS, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners would like to extend its gratitude and recognize Sergeant Major Michael Rhine for his selfless sacrifice protecting nations defending freedom, and combating terrorism and thank him for his invaluable assistance to our County of Monroe and its residents during one of our darkest hours. NOW THEREFORE, I, David Rice, by the power vested in me by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim the County's sincere appreciation to Sergeant Major Mike Rhine for his lifelong commitment and sacrifice to our community; and our County during Hurricane Irma emergency response upon his retirement on the First day of September in the year 2018.
