Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Month
March 2011
WHEREAS, Child Sexual Abuse is a horrendous crime that plagues the children of our
community, and
WHEREAS, many children fail to report sexual abuse out of fear and embarrassment
which allows the offenders to continue to victimize children, and
WHEREAS, Child Sexual Abuse is often not spoken of as its' victims and their
Guardians are unaware of what assistance is available to them, and
WHEREAS, Christina's Courage, A Center For Intervention, Advocacy, and Justice was
formed by concerned members of this community to assist victims of sexual abuse, and
WHEREAS, Christina was a local child victim of Sexual Abuse who had the courage to
confront her abuser, and
WHEREAS, the best way to combat Child Sexual Abuse is to bring awareness of this
horrendous crime to all members of our community so each of us can stand as a shield to protect
the innocent children of Monroe County, and
WHEREAS, March 19, 2011 is the beginning of "Lauren's Walk in My Shoes" walk
from Key West, Florida to Tallahassee, FL to bring awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse,
NOW THEREFORE, I, Heather Carruthers, Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, do
hereby declare March 2011, as
Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Month
