Info: Beth Kaminstein Art In Public Places Committee January 31, 2011 I am writing in response to your request for a brief summary of my pertinent activities that would qualify me as the best candidate for the Art in Public Places Committee. I graduated with a BA from Bennington College in Vermont in 1976 with a double major in Ceramics/Drawing and Dance. Since graduation I have maintained a professional practice as an artist, consistently exhibiting over the years as well as teaching at Greenwich House Pottery and Parsons School of Design in NYC. In the early 1980s, I designed and constructed a three -story residence on Mulberry Street in NYC, including the conception and installation of a ceramic fagade on this and another building in Harlem on East 104` Street. In 1988 I participated in the seminal exhibition "Firing the Imagination: Artists and Architects Use Clay" at the Urban Center in NYC, curated by Susan Tunick, president of the preservation group Friends of Terracotta. I was invited by Ms. Tunick to create a ceramic building unit for this show, which was widely lauded and reviewed. In 1997, I built, in collaboration with the architecture firm Jersey Devil http:// www .jerseydevildesignbuild.conV, the private Montessori Island School that then became a public charter school, Montessori Island Charter School in Tavernier, Florida. am also the founder of the Montessori Island School, which has been the focus of numerous articles in major architecture magazines. Through the Monroe County Council for the Arts, I was awarded and completed numerous Artists in the Classroom grants, working with various age groups to bring an awareness of the arts to these students. My commitment to art and architecture is also evident in the home that I constructed in Islamorada in 1992, which integrates a variety of ceramic elements that I designed into its structure. This is where I have lived and maintained my studio ever since. I am currently a board member of the Ocean Studies Charter School in Tavernier, as well as on the SAC of Coral Shores High School. I was a past member of the Islamorada Park and Recreation Committee and a board member of the Pace School for Girls, also in Islamorada. I was recently selected to work on the Broward County Greenways project, designing mile - marker and trail signage, and roundabouts, all out of clay with the iconography of local flora. I strongly believe in the value and impact that art in public places can have on the quality of life in the communities that are engaged in its installation and sincerely hope that I will be able to be involved with these types of projects and aesthetic decisions in the years to come. _'• • HOARD OF QDUUff CONNIMSIOMMS • r M W Sylvia 3.
