Description of Project: ], Outline or Description of Activities: Laurie Baratta, Storyteller, will provide a storytelling concert at the Monroe County May Hill Russell Public Library (Key West) in January or February 2000, This performance will be aimed specifically at elementary school children in grades 3 - 5 and their parents or caregivers although other children will also be welcome. In addition to the concert, Ms, Baratta will also conduct storytelling workshops for interested children both at the library and at a local elementary school during February 2000. 2. Goals and Curriculum Enhancement: To introduce children to the art of storytelling through the observance of a professional storyteller in performance, as well as to encourage children to learn their own story to tell to an audience by attending storytelling workshops, Storytelling teaches both speaking and listening skills, which are vital for success in many aspects of life, Observing a professional storyteller in action builds listening skills, stimulates inventive thinking, develops an appreciation of other people, places and cultures and increases appreciation and enjoyment of the performing arts. Learning to tell a story oneself improves expressive language skills. Children will work together in small groups with adult leadership, learning collaborative skills as well as the art of constructive criticism. Practicing timing, articulation, and expression can help children become more effective communicators. 3. Number and ages of students involved: Approximately 80 people can be expected to attend the storytelling concert at the Public Library, Glynn Archer Elementary School's two 4th grade classes (approximately 60 children) will participate in two-session storytelling workshops at their school followed by a chance to perform for other children and adults. Phyllis Pope, Library Media Manager, will act as contact person at the school. There will also be a storytelling workshop held at the Public Library for interested children in grades 3 and up (15 children maximum). 4. Preparation for Artist's Visits: Children's Librarian will visit 3 - 5 grade students at their schools to introduce the art of oral storytelling and encourage participation in the programs. Program will also be 5, Follow-up Activities and Evaluation: Children who have participated in the workshops will be encouraged to tell their story to an audience at the Public Library during the Library's regularly scheduled Family Hour program on Saturday mornings, as well as to younger students at their school. The Children's Librarian will informally conduct evaluation by soliciting feedback from participants, teachers, and parents, and she will be in charge of submitting the final report and providing press releases. "Story Tell-abration" invites listeners to sing, dance and howl along with "Story Laurie" on a journey of stories and songs from around the world, 2, Goals and Curriculum Enhancement: To introduce children to the art of storytelling through the observance of a professional storyteller in performance, Observing a professional storyteller in action builds listening skills, stimulates inventive thinking, develops an appreciation of other people, places and cultures and increases appreciation and enjoyment of the performing arts. 3.
