AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Report on Palm Avenue Bike Path, Key West.
ITEM BACKGROUND: After the December 1, 1999 Board Meeting, a group of
individuals met at Old City hall to discuss Palm Avenue Bike/Pedestrian Path. Included
at the meeting were City Commissioner Merili McCoy, Joan Langley of the Key West
Pedestrian Action Commission, Jim Malcom of the City's Planning Commission and
bicycle advocate, City Engineer Roland Flowers, and County Engineer David Koppel.
After much discussion, an agreeable plan was reached. The plan called for a six-foot
wide bike/pedestrian path to be placed on both sides of the roadway. The path would
be separated from the roadway with a two-foot strip of sod and connections between
the path and the roadway will be made as needed. This alignment will eliminate the
need to relocate the underground utilities, and will not interfere with the electric poles.
The stormwater management system will be redone and brought up to code during this
project. .
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: At the December 1,1999 Town Hall Meeting
in Key West, several individuals addressed the Board regarding the need for a bike
path and pedestrian walkway on Palm Avenue.
