Mayor's Proclamation
National Homeless Person's Memorial Day
WHEREAS, December 2 1"has been designated National Homeless Person's Memorial Day by
the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council,
and is so recognized by communities nationwide, and,
WHEREAS, the spirit of the holiday season of goodwill toward all provides an opportunity for
affirmation and renewal regarding our commitment to end homelessness; and,
WHEREAS, in this season of peace and goodwill, the citizens of Monroe County are encouraged
to commit themselves to promoting compassion and concern for all members of our One Human
Family, especially those who are poor and homeless; and,
WHEREAS, on Friday, December 20t" at 3:00pm, the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition will
coordinate a memorial service and inter the cremains of homeless individuals who have died in
Key West and Monroe County over the past year in the FKOC vault at the historic Key West
Cemetery; and,
WHEREAS, on Saturday December 21"memorial services will be held at Settlers Park in
Tavernier at 12:00prn and at St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon at 5:00pm; and,
WHEREAS,by remembering those who have died on the streets the cause of ending
homelessness is kept urgent; as is the community's collective commitment to preventing such
deaths in the future;
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Sylvia Murphy, Mayor of Monroe County, do hereby proclaim
December 2 I't, 2013 as
NATIONAL HOMELESS PERSONS MEMORIAL DAY
and would like to urge all citizens, residents and visitors of the Florida Keys to pause for a
moment on the longest night of the year to remember homeless persons who have died and to
support all local efforts to address the underlying causes and complex issues surrounding
homelessness.
