RESOLUTION NO. 160 -2000
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
DESIGNATING THE MEL FISHER MARITIME MUSEUM AS THE OFFICIAL
MARITIME MUSEUM OF THE COUNTY.
WHEREAS, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation
founded in 1982 for the purpose of educating both local and tourist audiences about the history
of Florida and the Caribbean; and
WHEREAS, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum owns and displays a large and unique
collection of historical maritime artifacts which tell the story of the founding of this country,
including the interrelation of native, European, and African populations through the course of
oceanic travel; and
WHEREAS, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum has displays that encompass the history of

WHEREAS, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum was founded by Mel Fisher,1 fiejire
synonymous with the Keys late 20th Century maritime activities of treasure salvaging; and
WHEREAS, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum has for over 15 years been the most visited
historical museum in Florida and the entire southeastern United States; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA, that
Section 1. The Board hereby names the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum as the Official
Maritime Museum of the County.
Section 2. The Board hereby endorses the Museum's use of this designation for
educational purposes such as enhancement of the understanding of the place the Florida Keys
played within the history of the nation and to educate school children in the vital matter of
preserving our seafaring heritage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 19th day of April, 2000.
