WHEREAS, Monroe County citizens have advanced environment1rlla'ii'd &- c
preservation efforts with vote approval to locally fund a county wide preservation
program; and

WHEREAS, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, is a Federal
Program designed to acquire and therefore save the protection of sensitive and
valuable natural areas in Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, the loss of natural areas in the Keys continues to threaten our
valuable natural systems, which are one of the most important foundations of
Monroe County's economy; and
WHEREAS, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, through the National
Wildlife Refuges of the Florida Keys, has already preserved thousands of acres
of environmentally sensitive lands; and
WHEREAS, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, through
appropriations for the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, offers an
opportunity to protect environmentally sensitive lands and support the
implementation of our County Comprehensive Plan; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County is designated an Area of Critical State and
appropriations from the Land and Water Conservation Fund will assist in
acquisition of lands affected by this designation; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County recognizes the importance ofland acquisition
in enabling the implementation of conservation goals, growth management and
comprehensive land use plans; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners hereby
urges the Congress of the United States to appropriate Land and Water
Conservation Funds, in the following amount, for land acquisition in the Florida
Keys for fiscal year 1999.
National Key Deer Refuge: $2 Million
Section 2. That the County Clerk be hereby directed to furnish copies of this
Resolution to United States Senator Bob Graham, United States Senator Connie
Mack, and United States Representative Peter Deutsch.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 11th day
of March, 1998.
