NelsoD RESOLUTION NO. 2003 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY IN RECOGNITION OF THE LATE KATHARINE "K" LUISA WILKINSON WHEREAS, Katharine Luisa Wilkinson, affectionately known to all as "K," passed away on March 26, 2003 at the age of 87; and WHEREAS, UK" Wilkinson was the daughter of the American Consul 10 Quito, Ecuador; lI1ld WHEREAS, UK" Willc.inson moved to the Upper Keys in 1936. married Jack Wilkinson in 1937. had three children, and spent five years living with her family in a beach front tent at Planter, near Tavernier; and WHEREAS, UK" Wilkinson helped establish Coral Shores High School in the Upper Keys where she Ialer worked as office manager for 21 years, retiring in 1977, and Coral Shores High School will be honoring UK" by naming its new administrative wing after her; and WHEREAS. UK" Wilkinson founded the Upper Keys Chapter of the American Cancer Society after losing her husband and a son to cancer, and was instrumental in raising $28,000 to purchase a room at the American Cancer Society's Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge so Monroe County residents could stay at no cost while receiving treatment in Miami; and WHEREAS. UK" Wilkinson was active with several groups inc;luding the American Red Cross, Mariners Hospital, the American Legion, [he Chi Sigma Sorority, and the Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys; the Tavernier Historical Group, Friends of Old Senlers Park, and the Tavernier Community Association; and WHEREAS, "K" Wilkinson was awarded the Upper Keys Jaycees Outstanding Senior Citizen of 1991; "Woman of the Year" by the Florida Commission on the StatUs of Women; Florida Women's Hall of Fame, 1996; the Eckerd list of 100 Outstanding V olunwers; Upper Keys Honorary ROUitian, 1991; and the DistingUIshed Service Award from the American Cancer Society, 1993; and WHEREAS, "K"Wilkinson is survived by her '~on Robert Wilkinson of Jack!lonville, FI; her daughter, Katharine Pickard. of JKksonville Beach, FL; her sister. MaJaka Russell of Pittsfield. Maine; seven grandchildren. and 13 great grandchildren; now. therefore BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY. FLORIDA: Section 1: Hereby adopts this Resolution as an expression to the family of their deepest sympathy in the passing of the late UK" Wilkinson, and in great appreciation of the service she gave 10 her community. Section 1: Mayor Pro Tem Murray E, Nelson forwards a copy of this Resolution to the family of "K" Wilkinson expressing the Board's sorrow and gratitude.
