AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH
MARCH 2011
WHEREAS
, each year during the month of March we formally recognize the American Red
Cross and its essential humanitarian role in our community and
WHEREAS
, this year, as we celebrate the 94th anniversary of the first American Red Cross in
the Keys, we honor the role of the Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys in making the Florida
Keys, and America, a stronger, safer and healthier place, and
WHEREAS
, for more than nine decades, the Red Cross in the Keys has led the effort to
prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters, and
WHEREAS
, from single-family fires to hurricanes, never have so many of our neighbors, near
and far, needed the help of the American Red Cross more and in so many ways, and
WHEREAS
, through it all, the Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys needed the citizens of
Monroe County who made contributions to fund the costs of providing immediate relief to save the
lives of friends, neighbors and strangers, and
WHEREAS
, major national disasters dominated the headlines, but the Red Cross quietly
responded to 22 local emergencies, helped families throughout the Keys; assisted dozens of military
families and trained 1,879 people in lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. Red Cross volunteers
were there to bring aid, information and just as importantly, comfort to those in need of it; and
WHEREAS
the local Red Cross and its hundreds of volunteers and donors provide valuable
tools and education to individuals, families, workplaces and schools, making us all stronger and more
resilient becaus
WHEREAS
, while we celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of the Red Cross in
building a better quality of life in Monroe County, we must also look forward and each do our part to
ensure that the Red Cross remains vital, ready to help us prevent, prepare for and respond to the
unknown challenges that lie ahead.
NOW, THEREFORE
, I, Heather Carruthers, Mayor, by virtue of the authority vested in me by
Monroe County, Florida, do hereby proclaim March 2011 as
AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH
and urge all Americans to continue to give their time, blood and money, to make a difference in
the humanitarian fabric of this community. Because when we help the American Red Cross, we
help each other.
