DECLARING JANUARY 18-26, 2020
AS WEEK of PEACE IN MONROE COUNTY FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the mission of Monroe County government is to provide outstanding public service
responsive to the needs of our citizens, our unique community and our environment; and,
WHEREAS, Monroe County government's programs and services have been designed to reflect
the diversity of needs in age, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, education and economic
background of the community; and,
WHEREAS, the issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples in our community and
beyond; and,
WHEREAS, the needs for safety, prosperity, and quality of life impel all citizens to work toward
converting humanity's noblest aspirations for peace into a practical and secure reality for future
generations; and,
WHEREAS, we believe that a peaceable world is possible when every man, woman and child
treats others as they wish to be treated--with dignity, equity and respect.
WHEREAS, we acknowledge that kindness plays a role in civic life and public discourse; and,
WHEREAS, Tibetan Buddhist Monks from H.H. Dali Lama's Drepung Gomang Monastery will be
visiting and offering blessing of peace, compassion, health, happiness and prosperity for our environment, P
our communities and families from the Upper Keys, through the Middle Keys and Lower Keys to Key West
during the week of January 18-26, 2020; and,
WHEREAS, various churches, synagogues, places of worship, businesses, families and individuals
in the Keys are being recognized for hosting or participating in the Week of Peace activities;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Heather Carruthers, Mayor of Monroe County, do hereby declare January
18-26, 2020 as:
WEEK of PEACE
in the `Southernmost County of the Continental United States". I urge all local governments to use care in
their public service, public health and actions, and all citizens, residents and visitors to honor each other
and the environment with acts of kindness, compassion and peace.
