AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Proclamation declaring May 17- 23, 2020 as Emergency Medical
Services Week in Monroe County, FL in honor and appreciation of emergency medical services
providers and their day-to-day lifesaving work.
ITEM BACKGROUND: May 17-23, 2020, is the 46th annual National EMS Week. In 1974,
President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work
they do in our nation's communities.
EMS Week is the perfect time to recognize emergency medical services providers who provide the
day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line"; most especially this year, when their
dedication, commitment and sheer determination was tested to the brink of exhaustion as they
worked tirelessly and unselfishly to save thousands of lives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
