AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to add one (1) full-time equivalent (FTE) for Fleet
Management to advertise and hire a new Mechanic position to assist with backlog of vehicle safety
inspections, preventative maintenance and routine repairs on County and Sheriff Office vehicles and
equipment.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Over a period of time the Fleet Department has gone from more than
twenty (20) full-time equivalent positions to the present fifteen (15) causing a never ending backlog of
planned inspections, preventative maintenance and routine repairs for Monroe County and Sheriff
Office Fleets. During the FY2014 budget process, two (2) new Fleet positions were requested, and
included in the revenue budget, but were not included in the final adopted operating budget. The
revenue budget is supported via the annual vehicle maintenance charge to all user departments.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: Several years ago, two (2) Fleet mechanic positions
were eliminated during budget process due to countywide cost cutting measures. Over a period of
time, Fleet's staffing level has been reduced by approximately 30 percent, while workload and backlog
continues to increase.
