Item N7 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY
Meeting Date March 19, 2013 Division: BOCC
Bulk Item: Yes x_No _ Department: George R. Neugent
Staff Contact Person/Phone #: T. Colonna 4512
AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Discussion with the Board of Commissioners in identifying all who can and should be responsible for
taking action to prevent future events e.g. MV Tilly from taking place.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
This was a preventable act. If not addressed pro actively by FWC, FKNMS, DEP, County,
Municipalities, utilizing all means of enforcement available, an exacerbated derelict vessel problem is
imminent; thereby, reducing BIF from better purposes intended. This further exhibits a reason to be
aggressive in early identification of marine vessels which have a clear potential of becoming derelict.
The cost to remove a floating structure is much less expensive than removing one that has sunk and
done seabed damage. An increase in managed mooring fields and aggressive inspection of vessels for
seaworthiness would help reduction the likelihood of irresponsible events like this from happening
