PETERHORTON
15 YEARS OF SERVICE AWARD
Peter began his career with Monroe County in June of 1999 as our Director of
Airports where his primary function is to manage the Key West International Airport and
Marathon Airport. In October of 2000,his job title changed to Senior Manager of
Airports and then in June of 2003, his tide changed again to Senior Director of Airports.
He worked his way up, increasing his experience as an Airport Director even though be
was responsible for both airports since day one. He works very closely with the FAA,
FDOT and other Federal, State and County agencies.
Peter successfully continues to maintain and improve operations at both the Key
West International Airport and Florida Keys Marathon Airport. His biggest
accomplishment was the completion of the terminal complex project and the runway
safety area project at the Key West Airport. In May, 2013,the$30.6 million bond that
financed the terminal project was paid off, twenty-three years earlier than expected;
therefore, seeing a cost savings of more than$32 million in interest payments! Peter was
also successful in hiring a new Assistant Director to manage the Marathon Airport and is
in the process of cross-training him of KW Airport activities. Most recently noted, Peter
was nominated by FDOT for the Prudential Davis Productivity Award for the
construction of the Runway Safety Area Project at the KW Airport. With that said, no
matter what the project it was always a success! Peter's personnel file is filled with
commendation letters; I think more than I've received of anyone. The latest
commendation letter was from Governor Rick Scott congratulating Peter on the Key
West International Airport recently being included in the Jacksonville Business Journal's
list of top Florida commercial airports.
Just to mention, from 1988 to March of 1999, Peter also held the titles of Division
Manager and Division Director of what we called back then the Division of Community
Services.
Peter,we thank you for your 15+years of excellent service to our County!
