Subject: FLORIDA HEALTH CLEANS UP! -A project to Increase physical activity for DOH employees and contribute to
healthier, litter-free environments
Importance: High
In April 2014, the Florida Department of'Transportation launched a media campaign built around the
theme "Drive It Home . . . Keep Our Paradise Litter-Free". According to State Surgeon General and
Secretary of Health, Dr. John Armstrong, "this [lifter prevention] effort not only emphasizes the
importance of clean spaces for safe driving, it highlights the opportunity we all have to reduce
roadside trash by making healthier choices."To show the DOH-Monroe County's support for
initiatives like "Drive it Home*, each county health department is asked to create teams of employees
who agree to voluntarily participate in an adopt-a-roadway activity (or other recurring outdoor cleanup
initiative). The Florida Department of Health's collective efforts will be called Florida Health Cleans
Up!
The goals of the "Drive It Home . . . Keep Our Paradise Litter-Free" project are to:
1) Increase awareness of the most common, types of litter (e.gi. cigarette butts and fast food
packaging)
2) Increase physical activity among DOH employees
3) Contribute to the communities,we live in by promoting healthier environments
DOH-Monroe County Employee Volunteers Agrees to:
■ "Adopt" a two-mile section of a State Highway
■ Dedicate two years to the program
• Follow specified DOT safety regulations
■ Remove litter a minimum of four times each year
FDOT Agrees to:
• Assist with safety meetings
■ Provide safety vests and litter bags
• Pick up litter at specified locations
• Post Adopt-a-Highway signs commending the group at the beginnings and end of their section
I
I have sent a request to the statewide FDOT, Office of Maintenance, to identify their Monroe County
Adopt-a-Highway representative who will work with us to craft a DOH-Monroe County volunteer
Florida Health Cleans Up! Partnership.
This is a sure fine way to meet and exceed out FY2014-15 Healthiest Weight Florida goals and
simultaneously work with our communities and address environmental health concerns!
Florida Health Cleans Upf is a project of Healthiest Weight Florida
