DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER 2020
IN MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, intimate partner, domestic, and sexual violence affect our society at an epidemic
level. In their lifetime, an estimated 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced physical violence by a
partner, and an estimated 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men have experienced some form of sexual violence;
and
WHEREAS, the problem of domestic violence is not confined to any group or groups of people, _
but crosses all economic,racial, gender, educational,religious, and societal barriers, and is sustained by
societal indifference; and 0

WHEREAS, domestic and sexual violence include a variety of abusive behaviors, including
physical abuse,psychological abuse, sexual assault, and stalking. Domestic and sexual violence can occur
in any type of relationship, including between spouses, intimate partners, dating partners,parents and
children, siblings, extended family members,teachers and students,or caregivers,patients, and the
elderly; and U
WHEREAS, domestic and sexual abuse violence remain seriously underreported crimes; and 2
WHEREAS, over 10 million people experience abuse every year in the United States. Women
ages 18-34 experience the highest rates of domestic violence. A weapon is used in 19%of domestic E
violence incidents. Firearms are a particular risk factor for domestic violence fatality: the presence of a
gun in an abusive relationship raises the risk of homicide for a female victim by 500%; and U

WHEREAS, victims of violence should have access to medical and legal services, counseling, CL
aL
emergency and transitional housing, and other supportive services so that they can escape the cycle of U
abuse; and
WHEREAS,we encourage domestic violence victims and their families to seek assistance from
appropriate victim's services organizations such as the Domestic Abuse Shelter; and

WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the compassion and dedication of the individuals who
provide services to victims of domestic violence and work to increase public understanding of this
significant problem; E

NOW THEREFORE,1, Heather Carruthers,by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor,
by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners do hereby proclaim the month of October 2020
as
DOMESTIC AWARENESS MONTH
And urge all citizens to actively support the Domestic Violence Abuse Shelter in their work towards the
elimination of domestic violence.
