NATIONAL HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK
NOVEMBER 15-22, 2020
IN MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, for the past 30 years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National
Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and
Homelessness Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of this proclamation is to educate the public about the many
reasons people are hungry and homeless including the shortage of affordable housing in the
Monroe County, especially for very low income residents; and to encourage support of �t
homelessness assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for
students and school service organizations; and
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 crisis a significant number of our community
members have experienced housing and food instability; and

WHEREAS, there are many local organizations committed to sheltering and providing c
supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to people experiencing homelessness and =
hunger; and W

WHEREAS, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners recognizes that hunger and
homelessness continues to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in our
community; and

WHEREAS, Monroe County and local organizations have made great efforts to help our
neighbors deal with the many financial difficulties related to COVID-19; and

WHEREAS, the intent of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is c
consistent with the activities of local hunger and homeless service organizations. s
NOW THEREFORE by the authority vested in me as Mayor, by the Monroe County
Board of County Commissioners do hereby proclaim the week of November 15-22, 2020 as
NATIONAL HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK
We would like to urge all citizens, residents, and visitors to recognize that many people do not
have adequate food and housing and need support from citizens,private/public agencies, and
nonprofit organizations.
