The American Red Cross is dedicated to helping people in time of need and is an organization led by
volunteers that provide relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to

WHEREAS, the American Red Cross is a unique American institution dedicated to helping people in
time of need, and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross mission is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that
provides reliefto victims of disaster, and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, and
WHEREAS, the Greater Miami & The Keys Chapter has been art important component of our
community for 83 years, and
WHEREAS, the Greater Miami & The Keys Chapter partners with the Office of Emergency
Management in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties to help respond to our citizens in time of disaster. During
the past year, the Chapter responded to 292 disasters, and committed over 3.7 million dollars to disaster relief,
and
WHEREAS, the Red Cross plays an important role in educating our public in safety issues, and helps
address our community's high accidental drowning rate. Over 8,200 individuals were trained in First Aid &
CPR, and another 29,318 were taught swimming and water safety, and
WHEREAS, the Chapter plays a vital role in educating our citizens on HIV/AIDS, and is addressing the
most pressing needs in our minority communities to help mitigate the impact of this health disas~er. More than
3,500 individuals participated in HIV/AIDS Prevention Education during the past year, and
WHEREAS, the Chapter reaches out to help our most academically challenged youth improve their
academic proficiency to better prepare them for their careers ahead, and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross relies on the generous financial support of private individuals and
organizations throughout our community to provide these important community services, and
WHEREAS, the delivery of these vital services is made possible through the donation of thousands of
volunteers who put aside personal concerns to help others less fortunate.
NOW, THEREFORE, by vi~e ofthe power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I
SHIRLEY FREEMAN, do hereby proclaim the Month of March, 2000 as:
