SUBJECT: HELEN WADLEY BRANCH LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM
Nora,
This past Friday, March 17, the Library, and its patrons lost a dear friend Enid Marks. Enid had been
fighting cancer since last Thanksgiving, and just recently, it had become evident that she would not win
that fight. Enid had been a library assistant in Islamorada for the past six years. I only had the privilege
of knowing her for 2 % of those years. Nevertheless, during that time I was able to witness the
dedication she had to the Library and to its patrons. If ever you needed a recommendation for a book
to read, Enid was always there with a suggestion. She ordered the best books, and she was able to
discuss books with anyone who came in. She could remember what new books were going to be
published, which copies the Library already had, and when, if a book was checked out, it would be
back on the shelf.
Not only was Enid knowledgeable about books, but she was equally knowledgeable about people. She
knew everyone's. name, and she was never too busy to talk to a patron. Enid made everyone who
walked in the door feel special and important.
The Friends of the Library would like to do something to honor Enid's memory. We would like to
name the community room at the Library, The Enid Markj Community Room. We feel this would be a
wonderful tribute to her indomitable spirit, and to her dedication to the patrons of the Library. It is the
Friends' wish, and it is my wish, that everyone who walks into that Library know that Enid was there,
and that she still is there in the hearts and minds of the Library's employees, friends, and patrons.
Please let me know if this letter is enough to start the process that will end in naming the community
room after Enid. In addition, if there is anything else that the Friends need to do to accomplish this,
please let me know.
Thank you so much for your help. This means more to me than r:can put into words, and anything you
can do to help us accomplish this will be greatly appreciated.
