'~ . l'roc1amatton WHEREAS, Florida has one of the largest population of American military personnel and veterans in the nation; and WHEREAS, Florida's military and veteran population is growing more rapidly than that of any other state; and WHEREAS, the military has played a big part in the economic and social life of the Florida Keys, and remains an important employer as well; and WHEREAS, among all of the Florida Keys residents in the workforce, 87 percent are considered civilian workers, but the other 13 percent or about 2,000 workers are in the Armed Forces, which is a much higher proportion than in the rest of the State of Florida; and WHEREAS, besides the enlisted employees, Key West's military base also employs a large number of civilians; and WHEREAS, in 1990, the military payroll in the Florida Keys was estimated to be $123 million, which after being spent over and over throughout the Keys, makes the economic impact of military salaries of more than $518 million; and WHEREAS, the Latin American Chamber of Commerce and all Monroe County residents are proud of the veterans and military personnel of our community and wish to recognize their efforts in preserving our freedom and the blessings of liberty for all; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that our citizens join in honoring our veterans and military personnel whose service and sacrifice allow us to enjoy freedom and a way of life unique in this world; NOW, THEREFORE, I, SHIRLEY FREEMAN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, do hereby proclaim the month of July, 2000, as: VETERANS AND MILITARY AWARENESS MONTH in Monroe County, Florida, and urge all citizens to remember and honor those American Veterans and military personnel in our community and to fully appreciate the freedom we have today due to their efforts.
