Dear Mayor Freeman:
On behalf of the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs, your county is
cordially invited to participate in a statewide endeavor to establish a
lasting tribute to those Floridians, past and present, who served our
Nation as members of the armed forces during World War II.
Sixteen million men and women served in uniform during that war. These
courageous men and women, commonly acknowledged as America's
"greatest generation," have earned the eternal gratitude of present and
future generations of Americans. In recognition of their selfless service, a
nationwide fundraising campaign has the National World War II Memorial
well on the road to completion with groundbreaking ceremonies scheduled
in Washington, D.C. this coming Veterans' Day.
Of all who served in WWII, 248,000 were Floridians. Today, the number
of WWII veterans who make Florida their home has grown to
approximately 600,000. In remembrance and honor of these veterans,
legislation was enacted last year by the Florida Legislature authorizing the
establishment of the Florida World War II Memorial Trust Fund for the
purpose of creating an eternal tribute to every Floridian, in uniform and on
the homefront, who made our Nation's WWII victory possible.
The Florida World War II Memorial will be a "living memorial" using
multiple venues to reach out to Florida's 67 counties and to bridge the
generations. As presently planned, the Memorial will include: a
permanent World War II exhibit in the Museum of Florida History located
in Tallahassee; a major traveling exhibit that will be featured in selected
museums as well as other community venues across the state; a statewide
network of World War II resources to include interactive Internet
presence and a full color booklet as part of the Florida Heritage Trail
series; and World War II public education programs and materials to
include a statewide supplementary public school curriculum for grades K
through 12.
Because WWII was an epochal event tha~ touched every Arn.eripan f!.mily and community, it is
appropriate that every Florida community join in the fundraising efforts for this tribute. In this regard,
the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs solicits the support of each board of county
commissioners in appointing an ad hoc coordinating committee of distinguished local citizens to direct
each county's fundraising efforts in support of the Florida World War IIMemorial.
We hope that you will accept this invitation to participate with other counties across the state in the
noble endeavor to preserve the indomitable spirit, exceptional commitment and willing sacrifices of
Florida's own. Please complete the enclosed participation form and return it in the enclosed envelope
at your earliest opportunity. For planning purposes we have also included next to each county, the
number of WWII veterans currently estimated to be living in your county.
Your support of Florida's World War II Memorial is greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
Encls.

FLORIDA.S WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
Tom Brokaw, in his now famous book, calls our World War II veterans and their families "the Greatest
Generation." All Americans owe an extraordinary debt to those millions who marched forth in the service
of their country united in a common cause. They gave all they had to give, and saw the best and worst of
human nature. They liberated Europe; restored peace in the Pacific; and then returned home to
strengthen our economy, enrich our society, and create opportunities for generations.
Of the 16 million American men and women in uniform, 248,000 were Floridians. Indeed, there are more
than twice that number -- 600,000 -- living in Florida today. We owe it to these veterans to remember
their indomitable spirit, exceptional commitment, and willing sacrifices. More importantly, we owe it to
them to pass on their values to future generations. .
The theme of Florida's WWII Memorial will be to preserve the indomitable spirit, exceptional
commitment, and willing sacrifices for generations to come. Florida is what it is today because of
the efforts not only of the veterans, but those who stayed behind to support them. The infrastructure of
the state - the road network, the defense establishment, and many of our factories and businesses - exist
today because of that time. It is appropriate then that the Memorial encompass and include the entire
state, not just those who can visit the state capital. It must be enduring. Because we are losing 1,000
WWII veterans nationwide each day, the Memorial will serve to educate future generations as to the
historical value of the war and the sacrifices of its participants.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The State of Florida, working through the Florida Department of State, will develop a living memorial to
Florida's involvement in World War II. Elements of the project will include an interactive network of
historical and military resources, permanental}d traveling exhibits, educational materials, oral history
programs, and community events that engage citizens of all ages. Concurrently, the Department of
Education will implement a World War II Supplementary Curriculum that enables young people who
have no personal memory of the event to understand the human experience of World War II in Florida.
t .
PRIMARY COMPONENTS:
A permanent World War n exhibit in the Museum of Florida History.
A statewide network of World War n resources that includes military installations, veterans'
organizations, historic sites, museums, libraries, universities, and historical societies, made accessible to
the public through technology and the Internet. Also a full-color publication on WWII in Florida as part
of the Florida Heritage Trail series, which will encompass all the WWII entities throughout the state.
A major traveling exhibit, tentatively opening in the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee on
December 7, 2001; that will then travel to museums around the state for four months each; that
provides both the basis for the permanent exhibit and for smaller traveling units suitable for local venues
such as schools and libraries
Public education materials and programs including a statewide supplementary curriculum, classroom
materials, resource guides, community events, and awareness and preservation projects.
