ITEM BACKGROUND: PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: STAFF RECOMMENDATION: BUDGETED: Yes No COST CENTER # TOT AL COST: COST TO COUNTY: REVENUE PRODUCING: Yes No AMOUNT PER MONTH YEAR APPROVED BY: County Atty _ OMB/Purchasing_ Risk Management _ DIVISION DIRECTOR APPROVAL: ~ DOCUMENTATION: Included: To Follow: Not Required: Agenda Item #: 1-133 DISPOSITION: .fflapor' 5 tlroclamation WHEREAS, a tradition of helping ones neighbors started with bam raising in the earliest days of our nation in the New England states; and WHEREAS, this tradition ofvo1Wlteerism continues today in Monroe COWlty and all of the Florida Keys; and WHEREAS, we are blessed with dozens of organizations from Key Largo to Key West which were created to improve the quality of life for people living in our communities; and ' WHEREAS, over the years these organizations have improved the quality of our environment, taught people how to read English, provided day care services, promoted the history of our Keys, and improved the lives of those living with AIDS to name only a few; and WHEREAS, hWldreds of our citizens, volWlteer their time to these organizations every week because they care about their families, friends and community; and WHEREAS, this caring also takes the form of donating money to these volWlteer organizations (in 1999, Americans donated more than $150 billion to charities); and WHEREAS, in 1996, The Community FOWldation of the Florida Keys was fOWlded to provide a permanent philanthropic endowment to meet community needs as they change over time; NOW, TIlEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe COWlty, Florida, I SHIRLEY FREEMAN, do hereby proclaim the Week of December 4, 2000 as: MONROE COUNTY PHILANTHROPY WEEK In recognition of our volWlteer organizations and their citizen volWlteers and in recognition of the Community FOWldation of the Florida Keys fOWlded to create permanent philanthropic endowments for our communities, and further in recognition of Leave A Legacy, created to promote the concept of planned giving to Monroe COWlty charities.
