PREVIOUS REVELANT DOCe ACOON: STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS: TOTAL COST: BUDGETED: Yes No COST TO COUNTY: REVENUEPRODUClNG: Yes_ No_ AMOUNTPERMONTH_ Year APPROVED BY: County Atty _ OMBlPurchasing _ Risk Management _ DMSION DIRECTOR APPROVAL: TYPE NAME HERE DOCUMENTATION: Included_ To Follow Not Required DlsPOsmON: AGENDA ITEM ## N. <6 WHEREAS, the five current county commissioners are not signers of the current agreement with FEMA and WHEREAS, the five current county commissioners are interested in working with FEMA to solve our common problems and WHEREAS, FEMA pays out 80% of its flood benefits to victims on rivers and tributaries and WHEREAS, FEMA is currently providing reliefto the city of Sweetwater, Florida in which 884 homes flooded, with mortgages, which had no flood insurance, and WHEREAS, only homes which sit in V zones would be in danger of wave action causing downstairs enclosures to threaten the integrity of the main building and WHEREAS, Monroe county has approximately 5 - 7,000 illegal downstairs enclosures which provide low-cost housing to 15 - 17,000 working people who support the economy of the Florida Keys and who do not have an alternative source of housing and WHEREAS, commercial buildings can flood-proof their downstairs enclosures and residential owners are denied this remedy and WHEREAS, current mandates are arbitrary and capricious, the time for rules to be reviewed and revised is long past due. THEREBY, The Monroe County BOCC respectfully requests that members of BOCC and FEMA meet to review the policy of removing the downstairs enclosures and not underwriting the insurance for the real estate of Monroe County based on non-compliance of current regulations.
