Frank Reese (West Palm Beach) Chairman August 2, 2000 The Honorable Shirley Freeman 500 Whitehead St. Key West, FL 33040 RE~~ 4 ZOOO ~ Hon. Guy Bono (Pinellas) Dear Mayor Freeman: Hon. Curtis Ebitz (Citrus) On behalf of the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs, your county is cordially invited to participate in a statewide endeavor to establish a lasting tribute to those Floridians, past and present, who served our Nation as members of the anned forces during World War II. Hon. Toni Lawrie (Pinellas) Hon. AI Linden (AIachua) Sixteen million men and women served in uniform during that war. These courageous men and women, commonly acknowledged as America's "greatest generation," have earned the eternal gratitude of present and future generations of Americans. In recognition of their selfless service, a nationwide fundraising campaign has the National World War II Memorial well on the road to completion with groundbreaking ceremonies scheduled in Washington, D.C. this coming Veterans' Day. Hon. Joseph Martory (Dade) Hon. Victor Ogilvie (Orlando) Of all who served in WWII, 248,000 were Floridians. Today, the number ofWWII veterans who make Florida their home has grown to approximately 600,000. In remembrance and honor of these veterans, legislation was enacted last year by the Florida Legislature authorizing the establishment of the Florida World War II Memorial Trust Fund for the purpose of creating an eternal tribute to every Floridian, in uniform and on the homefront, who made our Nation's WWII victory possible. Hon. Lawrence Strainge (palm Beach) Hon. Vince Whibbs (Escambia) The Florida World War II Memorial will be a "living memorial" using multiple venues to reach out to Florida's 67 counties and to bridge the generations. As presently planned, the Memorial will include: a permanent World War IT exhibit in the Museum of Florida History located in Tallahassee; a major traveling exhibit that will be featured in selected museums as well as other community venues across the state; a statewide network of World War IT resources to include interactive Internet presence and a full color booklet as part of the Florida Heritage Trail series; and World War IT public education programs and materials to include a statewide supplementary public school curriculum for grades K through 12. Because WWII was an epochal event tha~ touched every An)erifan f!rllly and community, it is appropriate that every Florida community join in the fundraising efforts for this tribute. In this regard, the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs solicits the support of each board of county commissioners in appointing an ad hoc coordinating committee of distinguished local citizens to direct each county's fundraising efforts in support of the Florida World War n.Memorial. We hope that you will accept this invitation to participate with other counties across the state in the noble endeavor to preserve the indomitable spirit, exceptional commitment and willing sacrifices of Florida's own. Please complete the enclosed participation form and return it in the enclosed envelope at your earliest opportunity. For planning purposes we have also included next to each county, the number ofWWII veterans currently estimated to be living in your county. Your support of Florida's World War n Memorial is greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Encls. 1. Participation Form 2. Regional POC List 3.
