Dear Patty,
Our current Sentinel Lobster Project, Order Number 40-WC-NC-004656, contract period is from 6/1/00 through
5/31/01. I respectfully request your consideration for the following three requests: 1) To give me an extension
on this year'S" budget through December 31, 2001. 2) to use some funds in support of our cooperative efforts
with FMRI to conduct underwater sampling of the Western Sambos ECological Reserve and adjacent areas in
July and September. And, 3) to use some of these funds to remove derelict lobster traps from our sample
areas during April and May. The removal of traps would be coordinated with the FWC and FKNMS to ensure
complete compliance with regulations and would be conducted only if all parties agree it is suitable. I have
approximately $9K in funds from this year's purchase order because our dosed season June sampling was
paid with 1999 funds under a similar extension of work request. This extension request will allow us to conduct
our dosed season sampling in June without concern about a hiatus in funding between Year 3 and Year 4. It is
very important that we maintain our June sampling schedule for inter-annual consistency and to avoid sample
conflicts with the FWC. FMRI July lobster sampling program.
Although this project was originally intended to extend through 4 years, through cost savings and extension of
grant periods, I hope to be able to save our funds to complete a fifth year of dosed season sampling and/or to
contract with a statistician to assist in analyzing the data generated by this project during the last year of the
project.
I need a response to this request before the end of March so I can get it to the Monroe County BOCC for their
approval at the March meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need additional information on any
aspect of this request
Thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
~~
Sea Grant Marine Agent/County Extension Director
