ITEM BACKGROUND:
Alicia Putney was nominated by Richard Grosso for her ongoing grassroots activism to promote more
effective planning to protect rich natural environment for the Florida Keys. Her work has resulted in
improved land acquisition and management processes and enhanced the implementation of the Monroe
County Comprehensive Plan, including major projects like the Florida Keys Carrying Capacity Study,
Wastewater Master Plan and the Big Pine Key Habitat Conservation Plan.

Community Activist Alicia Putney of the Florida Keys ,
Dr. John :\'1. DeGron, Florida Trend, and Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood
to Receive Growth Management Awards from 1000 Friends of Florida
TALLAHASSEE-lOOO Friends of Florida, this state's nonprofit growth
management "watchdog," is proud to announce the recipients of the 2001 Growth
Management Awards. Given annually, these awards recognize leaders who help
manage the impacts of this state's rapid growth in a wise and responsible manner.
Recipients will include Alicia Putney for ht:r years of grassroots activism to
protect the special character of the Florida Keys, Dr. John M. DeGrove for his
lifelong dedication to helping this state gro'''' smarter, Florida Trend for its
tradition of insightful coverage of the many growth-related issues facing this state,
and Mayor Glenda Hood for her leadership in using planning strategies to
revitalize neighborhoods and strengthen the economy in Orlando.
Additionally, 1000 Friends board members Robert Parks and Jerry Sokolow, and
Affordable Housing Director Jaimie Ross will be recognized for their years of
service to the organization and the citizens of this state.
Award recipients will be recognized at a ceremony to be held at the Historic Old
Capitol in Tallahassee on March 27, 2001. The awards ,,:ill be presented
beginning at 6:00 p.m., with a reception to follow until 8:00 p.m. The public is
invited to attend.
Jean Sadowski will present the Bill Sadowski Award for State Leadership, named
for her late husband, to Dr. John M. DeGrove. Noted journalist AI Burt will be
on hand to present the Al Burt A ward for Journalism to Florzda Trend, and to
sign copies of his books, Tropic of Cracker and Al Burt's Florida.
This is a particularly eventful year for grov.1h management. as the Governor and
Legislature contemplate major changes to Florida's approach to dealing with this
vital issue. "Our current system has evolved over the last thirty years," says 1000
Friends' Executive Director, Charles Pattison, "and it is especially appropriate
that we take the long view' and honor some of those \\no ha'\e devoted many years
to helping Florida deal with its groW1h-relaTed problems in a measured and
responsible manner."
Now celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, 1000 Friends of Florida is a nonprofit,
bipartisan membership organization that was established in 1986 to monitor this
state's growth management process. Each spring, at its annual award ceremony
and reception, 1000 Friends recognizes such individuals. communities and
projects that enhance the quality of life in Florida through better planning. For

Alicia Putney was nominated by attomey Richard Grosso tor the Community
Steward/Hometo\VIl Hero Award for her ongoing grassroots activism to promote more effective
planning to protect the rich natural environment of the Florida Keys. Through her tireless
volunteer etIorts, meticulous and dedicated research, constant communications with agency staff
and decision-makers, and outstanding advocacy, Putney has become "perhaps the most effective
grassroots activist in the Florida Keys," notes Grosso.
Her work has helped protect the endangered Key Deer from development-related threats,
resulted in improved land acquisition and management processes, and enhanced the
implementation of the Monroe COWlty Comprehensive Plan, including major projects like the
Florida Keys Carrying Capacity Study, Wastewater Master Plan, and Big Pine K.ey Habitat
Conservation Plan.
