Agenda Item Wording: Approval to purchase property in Paraiso subdivision as the Marathon Rotary
Park site.
Item Background: This purchase is proposed at the request of the City of Marathon to provide land for
recreational facilities. The subject property is located on the oceanside of Marathon on US-1 between
75th and 76th Streets. The property is zoned Suburban Commercial (SC) and Improved Subdivision (IS).
Parks are permitted in these zoning districts as a minor conditional use. The property's vegetation is
classified as disturbed with exotics. The proposed sequence of events is: 1) the Land Authority
purchasing the site; 2) the Land Authority donating the site to the City of Marathon and receiving a
conservation easement addressing Preservation 2000 restrictions; 3) the City of Marathon working in
partnership with the Marathon Rotary Club to develop the site with a playground; and 4) the City of
Marathon maintaining the property. Today's item is to approve step 1 only. Staff will request Board
approval to proceed with step 2 at a future meeting.
Funding for these purchases will come from the State's Preservation 2000 program, which will restrict
future use of the property to conservation and public recreation. The Land Authority's standard
purchase contract will be used, with the closing contingent upon the City of Marathon accepting a
simultaneous transfer of title and granting the required conservation easement. The agenda packet
spreadsheet lists the legal descriptions, purchase prices, and closing costs for this transaction.
Advisory Committee Action: Approval by 5/0 vote on May 31, 2001.
Previous Governing Board Action: On 12/14/00 the Board approved adding the original Marathon
Rotary Park site to the Acquisition List. Efforts to acquire the original site have been unsuccessful.
