Blue Heron Park

Blue Heron Park is located on Lytton's Way on Big Pine Key. The two-acre county park
includes a lighted basketball court, picnic pavilions, a "beach" volleyball court and
children's play area. There is a snack bar/kitchen area, TV/game room, restrooms and an
office for the administration of the BPAA. Under the youth center is a lighted game area
with a ping-pong table and picnic tables that has recently been enclosed by fencing. The
youth center is open every weekday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.rn. for after school activities
which include homework help and recreation. The park grounds are scheduled to be
open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
There is a basketball program every Tuesday and Friday evening from 6 to 8:30. This
program is open to anyone age 10 and over that wants to come out and play. Turn-out
ranges from 5 to 15 players. Alex Torres, a paid part-time employee, supervises the
basketball program.
The Big Pine Science Club meets regularly at the Blue Heron Youth Center. The Boy
Scouts (Troop 573) also use the facility weekly. The BP AA Board, Little League Board
and Soccer Board use the facility for meetings. The youth center also serves as a

registration office for the sport teams. Various community groups such as the Florida
Keys Amateur Radio Club also utilize the facilities.
Blue Heron was the site of a very successful Summer 2000 Program that provided full
time daycare including lunch for over 50 children ages 5 to 12 and also utilized teen
volunteers. The children participated in a variety of recreational and educational
activities as well as arts and crafts. The children took many field trips throughout the
Keys. Renee Kowalski was the Summer Program Director; Kathleen Fraider assisted her.
Hours of operation of the Youth Center:
January - June: 3 p.m. to 6 p.rn. M-F
June - August (Summer Break): 7:30 a.rn. to 6:00 p.rn. M-F
September - December: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. M- F

Blue Heron Park is open for public use from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.rn. daily. There is a new
walk-in gate for access to the park. There are lights on the basketball court on automatic
timer for evening use. Used for public events such as Moose Lodge Kid Fest and
Heritage Festival.
Summer Camp: 9 week program with 86 registered participants (average 25 - 30 per
day). There were many activities at the park including games, tournaments, arts and
crafts, guest speakers and Science Olympiad events. The children went on two field trips
each week. Breakfast, lunch and snacks were provided.
After-school: Drop-in program for kids to play indoor and outdoor games, work on
homework, use the computer for homework or run educational software programs.
Significant increase expected with creation of a bus stop near the park.
Additional Funding for 2001 used for:
1) Summer Program (covers shortfall)
2) After-school program
3) Salaries for Director (30 hr/week) and instructors
4) Creation of enclosed downstairs game room which includes 6 game tables and
sport equipment storage
5) Purchases of a wide variety of sporting equipment, board games, art supplies
for use by children in the after-school and summer programs
6) Purchase of refrigerator and water heater for youth center.
