Item B06 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: August 16, 2001 Division: Growth Management Bulk Item: Yes X No Department: N/A :f: AGENDA ITEM WORDING: A resolution to request State Representative Ken Sorenson to assist the County in investigating the feasibility, process, and conditions for the possible relocation of the Big Pine Key Road Prison and transfer of its ownership to the County for park and recreation purposes. ITEM BACKGROUND: The Big Pine Key Road Prison property has sufficient acreage, excellent location, and lack of constraining environmental features that make it an ideal site for active public recreation facilities. Residents of Big Pine Key have pointed to this site as an excellent choice for a possible park, if the Department of Corrections can be persuaded to close and/or relocate these facilities. At the Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting in early July, the Growth Management Division staff in response to questions about the possible future use of the site for recreation purposes indicated that it would ask the Board of County Commissioners to officially request Representative Sorenson to assist the County in exploring the feasibility of the transfer of this property to the County. Although it is recognized that the transfer of this property to the County may not be realistically attainable, the citizens of Big Pine Key would like to get a definitive answer one way or another. This resolution requests assistance from Representative Sorenson and designates Mayor Neugent as the Board liaison.
