Subject: FAA Approved Avionics Repair StationlMarathon Airport.
Theresa, thanks for returning my call today and giving me an overview on the
situation at the Marathon Airport concerning the possibility of opening a
avionics repair station on the field.
Since, Jim Bass's accident I have serviced some aircraft on an emergency
bases at the field, but I don't like doing this because of the 50 mile drive on the
Overseas Hwy (venerability of my test equipment), and the person must have a
hangar. I don't work outside. People have flown their planes here to Key West
that don't have hangars, but this is an imposition on them, and could be a
illegal/safety issue depending on the problem.
The viability of a full time shop would have to be established first prior to set-up,
until than I would operate, as present, on a part time bases at Marathon splitting
my time between Key West and the Marathon Airport.
We would require hangar space on an adhoc basis and a Shop close to but
preferably attached to the hangar. The shop must have:
1. Capability of with-standing a level III hurricane, because of the test
equipment.
2. De-humidified 24 hr'slday, because of the test equipment.
3. Air-conditioned 24 hr's1day, because of the test equipment.
4. Minimum 15x20 feet floor space.
5. Minimum 90 psi air, for pneumatic tools.
6. 110 vac power
7, 24 hr/day security because of the test equipment
8. Access to the shop and hanger 24 hr/day, because of emergency repair
requirement on grounded aircraft.
9. The ability to hire an avionics technician with the following credentials:
(a) A FAA Aircraft and Power plant license,
(b) A General Radio license,
(c) He or she certified by the FAA as avionics repair person.
(d) The person must agree to live close to the field, because of emergency
requirements for grounded aircraft.
(e) Must have at least 3 years experience on general aviation aircraft
This last requirement is the biggest problem facing the avionics repair industry
today, qualified people. During the past four years a number of people have
approach me looking for an avionics job in Key West, but they lack the
credentials. and since I am a one person shop I do not have time to train them.
Experience people cannot earn enough in avionics to live in the Keys.
I will close with a brief overview of my back ground:
Class "A" electronics school U.S.Navy
4 yr's as a Navy Electronics Technician, submarine service based in Key West.
Degree in Electrical Engineer, Purdue 1961
MBA program at the University of Chicago, did not finish due to overseas
assignment in Tokyo Japan.
40 years as a communications design engineer and engineering management
with Motorola Corp. Retired.
Private pilots license with instrument and multi-engine rating.
FAA Licensed Aircraft and Power Plant Mechanic.
