Here, at the Key West International Airport (KWIA), we scrambled to cope with the crisis and to rebuild our security protocols so that we could reopen and accept Commercial Air Carrier traffic. Sergeant Jerome Fain of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department is in charge of Airport Security at KWIA, so most of this burden was placed squarely upon his shoulders. During the two days that air traffic was shut down, KWIA received six (6) different and sometimes conflicting Security Directives from the FAA. Sergeant Fain worked long and hard, often into the night, arranging for additional security personnel, assessing potential security weaknesses and rewriting our security plan to meet the ever-changing mandates of the FAA. As a result of Sergeant Fain's efforts, KWIA and all of its airlines were certified to resume operations within forty-nine (49) hours of the attack. We salute and commend Sergeant Fain's selflessness and tireless devotion to duty. WELL DONE, JEROME, AND THANK YOU!
