Item K07 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: January 16.2002 Commissioner: George Neugent Bulk Item: Yes .-X- No_ AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Adoption of a Resolution to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation commission supporting the prohibition of diving for lobster in the confined waters of the Monroe County, such as man-made canals, basins, and marinas. ITEM BACKGROUND: At the last meeting of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) held in Key Largo, the \ issue of modifying the legislation concerning lobster mini-season was discussed. Suggestions such as the establishment of a shoreline buffer were considered. The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Law Enforcement staff (formerly the Florida Marine Patrol) indicated that the latter suggestion would not be enforceable, as it would be too hard to determine the apparent boundary of a shoreline buffer zone. In subsequent conversations with Major Long of FWC, he indicated that he , would support the establishment of a prohibition within the clearly definable confined waters of the County, such as canals. The municipalities have indicated similar support for this effort.
