He faces 30 years to life imprison- ment if convicted. "They dismissed the first case, which was ridiculous, and charged him with the bombing with no new evidence," said his attorney Jeff Weiner. Hodler was initially arrested Mar. 7 on a federal law pro- hibiting someone convicted of domestic violence from pos- sessing weapons or ammunition after an investigation into the car bombing turned up appar- ently unrelated ammunition in his car. In 1994, Hodler, 66, pleaded no contest to domestic battery of his then common-law wife, Evon Leach, the victim of the bombing. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spokesman Alan Latour said an analysis of debris from the crime scene was ongomg. Pat McCullah, an assistant Monroe County state attorney, said he is waiting for the results of forensic tests before decid- ing whether to file state charges. If state charges are filed, Hodler likely faces an attempted-murder charge and possibly state charges that mir- ror the federal charges, said McCullah. Hodler is scheduled appear before federal magistrate Hugh Morgan Tuesday in Key West. Layton to hold workshop on Border Patrol station By SCOTT FUSARO ~lrlllf1't.- slusaro@keynoler.com . facility's suitability handled by the agency regional office in Burlington, VI. The Border Patrol, part of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, set up a permaneQt Middle Keys operation last March, working out of offices in Coco Plum. However, it has been looking to move to larger facili- ties. Mellia said last month the Layton location would be an inter- im facility "that we could get our officers into now." A few years into the future, the agency would look toward acquiring a perma- nent facility, he said. He added that the Layton facility would be able to house 20 to 25 agents. Skip Haring, administrative assistant for the city, said most residents seemed to be in favor of offices for the federal agents, but did not want a processing center where illegal aliens are held before being transported to Miami. A workshop on the proposed Border Patrol station will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Layton City HaIL Fearful of a second Mariel boat-lift landing on the shores of Layton along with attendant demonstrations and news media, the City Council Oflhis tiny ham- let at mile marker 68 last week passed a resolution opposing the presence of a U.S. Border Patrol processing center in its confines. Last month, the agency held a meeting with Layton officials and residents to discuss moving into a vacant Layton building known as the "horseless carriage," across from the Little Italy restaurant, said Layton Mayor Carol MacLaren. But while the council "acknowledges the good work of the U.S. Border Patrol" and "sup- ports the Border Patrol and its activities, it opposes the U.S. Border Patrol's use of the site as a detention center/processing cen- ter/prison for illegal aliens," says the resolution. Border Patrol spokesman ioe Mellia said the concerns would be taken into consideration as part of an environment assessment of the In brief Conch Tour Train station vandalized ing causing about $15,000 in dam- age, according 10 the Key West Police Deoartmf'.nt
