Agenda Item Wording: Approval of contracts to purchase property - Big Pine CARL acreage (RE
#111590).
Item Background: This item is proposed to protect property rights and natural resources and to
acquire property in CARL projects as required by the Comprehensive Plan Work Program.
The subject property consists of 1.2 acres of pineland vegetation on Loma Lane on Big Pine Key. The
property is within the State Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) project and the National Key
Deer Refuge. The parcel is zoned Suburban Residential (SR) and would score poorly in ROGO due to
its environmental sensitivity.
If available, funding for this purchase will come from the State's Preservation 2000 program, which will
restrict future use of the property to conservation and public recreation. Otherwise, funding will come
from the Land Authority's local revenues with the possibility for future resale to the State. The Land
Authority's standard purchase contract will be used, with the Seller agreeing to pay up to $500 toward
the removal of trash and debris. The agenda packet spreadsheet lists the legal description, purchase
price, and anticipated closing costs for this transaction.
Advisory Committee Action: On 3/27/02 the Advisory Committee voted 5/0 to approve this purchase.
Previous Governing Board Action: The Board has approved the purchase of many parcels in the
CARL project on Big Pine Key.
