ITEM BACKGROUND: May 16-22, 2021, is the 46th annual National EMS Week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation's communities. This year's theme is "This is EMS: Caring for Our Communities." EMS Week is the perfect time to recognize emergency medical services providers who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line"; most especially this year, when their dedication, commitment and sheer determination was tested to the brink of exhaustion as they worked tirelessly and unselfishly to save thousands of lives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
