WHEREAS, child abuse is a community problem and finding solutions depends on involvement among
people throughout Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, nationally, the annual costs of child maltreatment is equivalent to $1,461.66 per U.S. family;
WHEREAS, at least 30 Florida children were killed by abuse or neglect at the hands of their parents or
caretakers in 2000, more than three-fourths of who were under age 5; and
WHEREAS, Florida children are dying at the hands of their parents or caretakers more frequently than one
very two weeks; and
WHEREAS, at least one in every 28 Florida children are abused and neglected each year; and
WHEREAS, the effects of child abuse are felt by whole communities, and need to be addressed by the
entire community; and
WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among
social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations, law enforcement and the business community;
and
WHEREAS\ every month, more than 10,000 Florida children are abused at a rate of a new one every four
minutes; and
WHEREAS, since July 1, 1995 through January 31, 2002 there has been 5,384 reports of child abuse and
neglect in Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, all citizens should become more aware of the negative effects of child abuS!e and its prevention
within the community, and become involved in supporting parents to raise their children in a safe, nurturing
environment.
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners will work within the County
system of Govemment to address the issue of child abuse by supporting communiiy educational efforts and
enforcing the legal prosecution of perpetrators.
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I, CHARLES
'SONNY' MCCOY, do proclaim the Month of April, 2002 as
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
and call upon all citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities, and businesses to
increase their participation in our efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby s gthening the communities in which we
live.
