WHEREAS, on any given day, almost 15,000 children in the state of Florida are living in
foster care; and
WHEREAS, foster parents throughout the state of Florida dedicate themselves to
providing foster children with the love and values that help prepare them for responsible
adulthood; and
WHEREAS, in Monroe County there are 40 to 50 children in foster care each month
residing in one of twenty-eight licensed foster homes county-wide; and
WHEREAS, these families have taken resPonsibility for these children and have opened
their hearts and homes; and
WHEREAS, in Monroe County there is a current need for a greater variety of licensed
foster homes to meet the special needs of children coming into foster care; and
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me- as Mayor of Monroe County,
Florida, I, CHARLES 'SONNY' MC COY, do hereby proclaim May, 2002 as
Foster Care Month
and call upon all citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities, and
businesses to increase their participation in our efforts to support the foster care community,
thereby strengthening the communities in which we live.
